To acknowledge that the Roman spelling of Kiev does not recreate the phonetic and scriptural features of the Ukrainian language geographical name. 2. To confirm that spelling of Kyiv as standardized Roman-letter correspondence to the Ukrainian language geographical name of Київ. 3. On the basis of point 7 of the Provision on the Ukrainian Commission for Legal Terminology, determine as mandatory the standardized Roman-letter spelling of Kyiv for use in legislative and official acts. 4. * Hello, I am strongly supporting this petition. Just imagine for a moment if someone have spelled “America” with the letter “k” instead of the proper “c”. It woild still sound the same(!) but at the same time it would be definitely a scandal on the global scale. In case of “KYIV” misspelled as “KIEV” out of four we have two wrong letters. It is not only look different but it also sounds completely differrent. So how can we possibly appreciate our capital spelled this way? Our hopes are that all the necessary steps will be taken as soon as possible in order to restore the historical truth. It is KYIV, ladies and gentlemen! * I very strongly support this – Kyiv, not Kiev. The Economist should use the correct spelling Kyiv in order to stay a respected journal – if The Economist does not use this and insists on using the wrong spelling Kiev then it loses all credibility. I always thought of The Economist as a distinguished publication and now it makes you wonder what else it has wrong.

* As a Ukrainian Language instructor living in an English country – Canada, it makes no sense to me that a publication of the stature of “The Economist ” makes such errors. In Ukrainian Київ = Kyiv in English. Please make accurate corrections as are carefully cited above. Thank you, Tymofiy Hawrysh Edmonton, Alberta CANADA T6C 4R3

* Kindly correct the manner in which you refer to the Ukrainian capital city. It is KYIV. It is NOT Kiev. Surely a publication of your stature should know the difference. The little things do matter. Would you even consider using Peking in reference to Beijing? Thank you.

* I totaly agree with the above statement. England is such a civilised country, The Economist, which I read all the time is such a civilized magazine, but will be totaly civilized if you use the correct term/name for the capital of Ukraine–KYIV, and not the RUSSIAN term/name KIEV. Please advise me of the change. Please confirm or deny the change. My particulars are below: Many thanks Best regards, Leonid (Leo) Oleksiuk President & CEO Encore Productions & Ukrainian Film Club 2323 Lakeshore Blvd., W., Suite 911 Toronto, Ontario, Canada M8V 1B8 Tel. 416-521-9555 Mobile: 416-276-2872 Email: encore1@rogers.com Website: www.encore-productions.com

* We have grown to accept Mumbai as the correct saying of the great city in India. The days of referring to Thailand as Siam are behind us. Peking is now just used when ordering duck at a Chinese restaurant. It is now time to write KYIV – if the world edition of Monopoly is more progressive than the economist it really is a sad, sad day!
