Lesya Yurchyshyn:
* I have been working in the travel industry in Ukraine for 8 years from now. I was born and live in Lviv, Ukraine. I work for the travel agency ‘Lviv-Inturtrans’ http://www.lviv-inturtrans.com/ as a travel agent and an English speaking tour guide. Our company’s partner is ‘Scope Travel’ http://www.scopetravel.com/, USA, so it means most of the time our clients are those who speak English which is why we often encounter this problem of misspelling the capital of Ukraine. We always try to ‘teach’ our clients and partners to spell Kyiv the way it has to be, so not Kiev, as it is very Russian and Ukraine is not a colony of Russia any more!! It is an independent country for 17 years from now!! Me myself always ‘fight’ with this totally wrong spelling of Kyiv and Lviv=Lvov (specifically in newspapers and by airlines companies), and using the article ‘the’ with the name of our country (the Ukraine). Like for example if you go to the web-site of the airlines company ‘Wizzair’ you will find there all the correct spelling of Kyiv and Lviv, but if you had gone to that web-site a few weeks ago, you would have found there just KIEV and LVOV. Which is why I emailed them explaining the whole thing about this misspelling and now what you can see on the website?? All the right things!!! A little victory, right?! So once I got a message from ‘e-poshta’ that Ukrainians in London are petitioning to stop referring to the capital of Ukraine in English using ‘Kiev’, I got very excited about that because this is what I do fight for too, which is why I am using this opportunity to sign the petition!!! Thanks for doing that!!!

* You could also add the overnight switch from Peking to Beijing, etc. It is an inexcusable journalistic delinquency and a crass affront to insist on using terminology that was imposed by a foreign, Soviet Russian regime that murdered millions seeking to preserve their identity and history. Yuriy Nesterov

Andriy Kyivite:
* @Alexey Bogatiryov: First of all, even if Kyiv gave birth to modern Russia, it is up to Ukrainians, and strictly in this discussion, to English speaking world on how to name it. United Nations Multilingual Terminology Database defines the name as Kyiv in English and Kiev in French. This is the only right way to spell it in corresponding language. All other – are typos and errors. Since when is it that Russian speakers are the majority in Ukraine? Can you be more specific and provide your sources? According to all recognised censuses this is the status quo: Ethnic groups: Ukrainian 77.8%, Russian 17.3%, Belarusian 0.6%, Moldovan 0.5%, Crimean Tatar 0.5%, Bulgarian 0.4%, Hungarian 0.3%, Romanian 0.3%, Polish 0.3%, Jewish 0.2%, other 1.8% (2001 census) Languages: Ukrainian 67%, Russian 24%, other 9% (includes small Romanian-, Polish-, and Hungarian-speaking minorities) Not only you have issues with English, geographical names, but now with the numbers too. According to legend, Kyiv derives its name from Kyi, one of its founders. Now that you have switched from Bombay to Mumbai, from Calcutta to Kolkata, and from Kishinev to Chisinau, why haven’t you switched from Kiev to Kyiv? The Christian Science Monitor already has, along with Facebook and Twitter.
We Ukrainians deserve freedom no less than Indians and Moldovans do. If you respect our freedom as much as you respect the freedom of Indians and Moldovans, make that change.
